Ayurveda is a perfect ancient science of life; the word AYUR literally means life and VEDA, the science or knowledge. Ayurveda briefly explains the knowledge of the do’s and dont’s one hasto follow, which favors the well-being of each individual to lead a healthy, happy, comfortableand advantageous life physically, mentally & socially. Ayurveda also emphasizes that "preventionis better than cure."
There are four Vedas or treatises which form the basis of Indian Philosophy. They being theRIGVEDA, the YAJURVEDA, the SAMAVEDA and the ADHARVA VEDA. Ayurveda has emergedout as the branch of ADHARVA VEDA dates back over five thousand years. It is said to have beenoriginated from LORD BRAMA (creator of the universe according to Indian Philosophy) and hasbeen descended to the earth through various generations of GODS and SAINTS. This has beenhanded down to us by means of ancient venerable scripts as palm leaf books, leather leaves etc.The oldest works in Ayurveda now available are the CHARAKA SAMHITHA, SUSRUTHASAMHITHA, and ASHTANGA SAMGRAHA.
Ayurveda is also known as "ASHTANGA VEDA" (the word literally means "Eight branchers of knowledge") as it is divided into eight specialized branches. They are as follows
According to Ayurveda every living and non-living being in this universe is a combination offive basic eternal elements, called Pancha Maha Bhoothas. Human Body is also constituted by these five eternal elements in various compositions. Hence it can be conceived that every cell of body ispossessed with all the properties of life. The only difference of Human Body from the external. The Science of life which explains the knowledge of various guidelines to be followed inorder to make a healthy living is called AYURVEDA.
World is the expression of CHAITHANYA or consciousness or life spark or spirit or soul. The fivebasic eternal elements are: -
These eternal elements manifest in the Human Body as three basic principles or subtle energies orhumors (tridosha in Sanskrit). The word Dosha literally means that which maintains andcontrols the body. They are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The Pancha Maha Bhoothas and Tridoshasare not prevalent to the naked eye. But they should be conceived on comprehensive terms in whichall-physical structures and physiological Functions of the body are included. The Air and Etherelements combined to form the Vata principle. The fire element constitutes Pitta Principle. Earthand Water elements combine to form Kapha Principle. These three basic principles govern allbiological, physiological and physio-pathological functions of the body, mind and consciousness. They act as basic constituents and protective barriers for the body in its normal physiological conditions.
The concept of Agni is a unique thing in Ayurveda Science. In external world it is observed as theform of solar energy. The representative of this Solar Energy in the living organism, which isresponsible for all type of metabolism is called as Agni. Since the tissues of the living body arenot exactly similar to the food we eat, the food should be converted in such a manner so that theyare absorbed into the system toreach energy cells of the body for its maintenance. This conversionis brought about by Agni.
